Kybella® is most commonly used to treat submental fat (the “double chin”), but may also be used in other small areas of localized fat.

  • Kybella® works by destroying fat cells in the treated area. Once injected, the deoxycholic acid breaks down fat cell membranes, and the body naturally eliminates the destroyed fat cells over time. Once these fat cells are gone, they do not return.

  • Yes, Kybella® is FDA-approved and considered safe when administered by a trained and experienced medical professional. As with any injectable treatment, there are potential risks and side effects, which will be reviewed during your consultation.

  • Good candidates are adults with moderate to full localized fat who want a non-surgical option for fat reduction. Ideal patients have good skin elasticity and are close to their goal weight. A consultation is required to determine if Kybella® is the right treatment for you.

  • Kybella® provides permanent fat reduction in the treated area, as the destroyed fat cells do not regenerate. Multiple treatment sessions are often needed, typically spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

  • Discomfort is moderate but temporary. A topical numbing agent and/or ice is often used to improve comfort. Patients commonly report a burning or stinging sensation during injections, which typically subsides within several minutes.

  • Downtime varies by patient and treatment area. Swelling is expected and can last several days to a few weeks, especially after the first treatment. Bruising, tenderness, numbness, or firmness may also occur. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days.

  • After treatment, you should avoid:

    • Strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours

    • Excessive heat (saunas, hot tubs, sun exposure) for several days

    • Alcohol for 24 hours

    • Touching, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated area unless instructed

  • To minimize bruising, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E) for several days prior to treatment unless prescribed by your physician. Arrive with clean skin and follow any pre-treatment instructions provided during your consultation.
